Mister Helios
Mister Helios is a certified organic and natural white wine produced by Kalogris Organic Winery, a family-run estate situated in the village of Kapsia on the Mantinia plateau in Arcadia, Peloponnese. This wine pays homage to the sun ("Helios" in Greek), reflecting the radiant climate of its origin. As the first organic and natural Moschofilero imported into the U.S., it showcases the winery's dedication to traditional methods and the unique expression of the Moschofilero grape.
Grape Variety
100% Moschofilero
Annual Production
Approximately 2,500 bottles .
Cultivation
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 670 meters on clay loam soils, benefiting from cold winters and sunny summers with low temperatures during harvest. Vines were planted between 1980 and 1988, with a planting density of 3,000 vines per hectare and a yield of 2 kg per plant. All vineyard work is performed manually by the Kalogris family, adhering to certified organic practices without irrigation and with minimal treatment (only one copper spray). Harvesting is done manually in plastic crates.
Vinification
The wine undergoes a Blanc de Gris vinification, with direct pressing of the gray-skinned Moschofilero grapes using a mild pneumatic press. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks over 18 days, without temperature control. Malolactic fermentation completes naturally. The wine matures for 3.5 months on its lees in a 3-ton stainless steel tank under inert gas. No additives are used; the wine is unfiltered and unfined, with only limited sulfur added at bottling.
Flavor Characteristics
“Mister Helios” exhibits typical Moschofilero aromas of stone fruits and floral notes, including hints of rosewater and almond. The palate offers a round texture balanced by the grape's natural sharp acidity. A slight oxidative note on the nose adds complexity, while the wine's saline edge and juicy, refreshing fruit flavors—such as grapefruit, lemon, and peach skin—enhance its allure.
Food Pairing
This wine pairs exceptionally well with Mediterranean dishes rich in herbs, spices, oil, and lemon. It complements vegetable, fish, or chicken dishes, and is particularly suited to meze-style cuisine .
